Dating back to the 17th century, the restaurant was originally a \u201crefreshment stand\u201d that served bread and wine to peasants who came and delivered grain to the Vatican\u2019s customs office, located then on the same street. In the 19th century, it became an inn known for its excellent bocce court (bowling green). Today, that bowling green is a lovely garden in which on warm summer nights patrons may eat dishes such as artichokes with hazelnuts or calamari saut\u00e9ed in garlic cream.
